Regional landrace populations from places such as Afghanistan, Thailand, and Colombia formed the foundation of nearly every modern cultivar. Breeders crossed these traditional lines through the late twentieth century, gradually producing thc cannabis seeds with far higher potency than any wild population had shown. Selective breeding concentrated the trait over successive generations while stabilizing growth habits suited to indoor cultivation. Preservation projects now work to keep the original landraces from disappearing entirely.
